A piece of advice to understand your assignment brief is do not rush, sit down get a cup of tea or chocolate, get your pen and paper and start reading the brief, make jottings and the rest would follow.
Scan through for a first look.
Read line by line for a thorough read.
Understand the verbs that tell you what to do. Example: explain, critically examine, evaluate, describe, outline, assess, appraise.
Pick out the keywords and check how they connect to another. Please see the assignment sample below.
Undertake an appraisal of a publicly quoted company (London Stock Exchange) along with its financial performance and position. Please submit your appraisal in report format, using the CORE analysis framework.
The CORE analysis framework will be expected to be applied as part of the submission.
Porter’s 5 forces should be applied as part of the ‘External Context’ section of applying the CORE analysis.
A SWOT analysis should be applied as part of the ‘Internal Context’ section of the CORE analysis.

5. Pick out the task words (directive words) and understand them. Example: submit in report format, use the core analysis framework (be guided by it when writing), use Porter’s 5 forces as part of external context of CORE analysis framework, use SWOT analysis for internal context of CORE analysis framework.
6. Decide on the type of sources required for the search.
Example
Market research sources (databases), & academic search engine : this would be ideal to investigate the company’s financial performance and position.

7. Frame your search terms and search formations: please see explanations below.
Search terms are the key terms or keywords and formations that would guide the search. They are usually made up of the keywords in the assignment brief, wider terms or narrower terms, synonyms (for more results), search expressions like Boolean operators. It is important at this point to understand keywords you are using to give you a better view of resources you need.
Examples
London Stock Exchange: single search in market research databases. Then Look for Financial Performance (FP) AND Position (P).
London Stock Exchange AND Financial Performance: {search in Academic search engines).
London Stock Exchange AND Financial Position: {search in Academic search engines).
Search questions would be questions you ask, which you would need to answer during your search.
Example
What is meant by “appraisal”? {to understand the task}.
What is meant by financial performance? (pick out the elements, they would help in refining your search).
Definition of financial performance.
What is London Stock exchange financial performance?
What is London Stock exchange financial position?
What are porters five forces? (It would help you to understand the task and to know the elements required for the core analysis).
What is SWOT analysis? (to understand the task, help in search and write the assignment).
